Biography contributed by Robert Wight

Private Bill Rose became a casualty on 16 May, 1918. The 16th Battalion’s war diary described that
day’s events near Villers-Bretonneux:

Wed: May 16th
Enemy artillery more active during last few days. The railway line and the battery positions
immediately north of Battalion headquarters were heavily shelled at intervals during the
afternoon by guns of big calibre. Aeroplanes very busy during the day, and again as soon as
the moon was up. Many bombs were dropped and one man was killed and four others
wounded by one.

Bill Rose was the unlucky soldier killed by the blast. His file contains an extract taken from the unit
war diary that was forwarded to Bill’s next-of-kin.
