REARDON Patrick Leslie 523 PTE
4TH Battalion
1894-1971
Patrick Leslie (Les) Reardon was born in Violet Town, the fourth son of Patrick and his wife Ann Marie (Traynor). On 25 August 1914, at the age of 20 he was the first of his family to enlist.
Prior to his enlistment he was working as a bank clerk in Kensington, NSW. On 20 October 1914 Les embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Euripides, bound for Egypt. The following 25 April he landed at Gallipoli as part of the second wave. He served at Lone Pine.
In July he was evacuated to Cottonera Military Hospital, Malta, suffering from appendicitis. He left Malta on 5 September to be posted to the Base Depot at Abbey Ward, England. The following July 1916 Les was sent to France where the 4th Battalion was engaged in the hostilities at Pozieres.
On 28 July while not on duty, Les fell from a train, accidentally fracturing his right leg necessitating an amputation. This took place at the 1st Auxiliary Hospital from where he was discharged in October and sent to No 1 Command Depot at Wareham.
He remained there until 4 May 1917 when he returned to Australia aboard Themistocles.
Les was discharged on 2 August 1917. He resumed his career in the bank and rose to be Bank Manager in Melbourne. He died in 1971 and is buried at Violet Town Cemetery.
