Flight Sergeant Ian Macdonald Scott (Service No:417123) enlisted in the RAAF on 6 December 1941 at No 5 Recruiting Centre Adelaide as an Aircraftman II. Promoted to Flight Sergeant, he was attached to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) from 29 July 1942 - 24 January 1943, and the Royal Air Force (RAF) from 25 January 1943. Flight Sergeant (Pilot) Scott was attached to 97 Squadron when he completed a succesful Air Operation bombing over Berlin on 17 December 1943. On return from the mission, the Lancaster aircraft JB117 he was Piloting was diverted due to bad weather, and crashed near Gravely Airfield in Huntingdonshire. All crew members were killed (RAAFA).
Ian was born in Burra, South Australia in 1923, second of three children (and only son) of Archibald (Archie) William Scott (b1896 in Kensington, South Australia) and Kate Williams (b1894 in Kadina, South Australia). Archie was a Boundary Rider in 1914 before serving in the AIF and, following his Discharge, he and Kate married in 1920 in Black Rock. They were amongst the earliest settlers at the Springbank Estate in Keswick, where they raised their family and Archie was a Farmer until his death in 1930.
Ian commenced an Apprenticeship with SA Railway Workshops as a Fitter on leaving school in 1939, and attended Islington Technical College as part of his Apprenticeship. He was twenty years of age when he died.
