Son of Malachi Colman Beatty and Viola Louise Margaretha Beatty, of Whyalla, South Australia

Fond of tennis, cricket and golf, he won the Iron Knob Golf Championship in 1938. Before enlisting he had previously topped the State in 3 grades of typewriting and business correnspondence.
