2733 Private (Pte) William Cecil Metherall was a carpenter from Castlemaine, Victoria prior to enlistment. Pte Metherall embarked with the 6th Reinforcements, 22nd Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Ulysses on 27 October 1915.
Later transferring to the 58th Battalion he was promoted to Corporal and wounded in the left hand and evacuated to England.
Following his recovery he re-joined his battalion and was promoted to Sergeant. Subsequently wounded in the neck he was again evacuated to England and, due to the severity of his wound, returned to Australia on 5 April 1918 and was medically discharged.
