Hector served at the Anzac Landing and went through the whole Gallipoli campaign unscathed, a rare feat. He was severely wounded in action on the 17 July 1917, when a shell concussed him. The resulting trauma to his brain caused his death in Field Hospital ten days later.
Hector's younger brother 2711 Private Percy Nielson Johnson 5th Trench Mortar Battery AIF, was killed in action near Armentieres, 5 May 1916, aged 24.
