Biography contributed by Trevor Pyatt

Brian Whyndom Gray

Brian Whyndom Gray was born on 21 March 1923 in Adelaide, South Australia, the eldest surviving son of Alfred Whyndom Gray and Elizabeth Jean Secker. His birth was registered in the Adelaide district in Book 113A, Page 535. He grew up in the Prospect district during the difficult years of the Great Depression, alongside his younger brother William Benjamin “Ben” Gray.

Brian carried forward the distinctive middle name “Whyndom,” a name closely associated with the Gray family line. His childhood was marked by both hardship and love, following the earlier loss of his infant sister Nancy Jean Gray in 1920.

As a young man, Brian worked as a junior draughtsman at Port Adelaide, reflecting a practical and skilled background. His National Archives service records describe him as educated, mechanically capable, and experienced with motor vehicles and repairs.

With the Second World War underway, Brian enlisted in the Australian Military Forces on 19 September 1941 at Prospect, South Australia, aged only eighteen years. He served as:

Private Brian Whyndom Gray

Service Number: S68597

2nd (SA) Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC)

The Volunteer Defence Corps formed part of Australia’s wartime home defence system, protecting local communities and infrastructure during a period of genuine concern over possible attack on the Australian mainland. Brian served throughout much of the war and was discharged on 11 October 1945.

His enlistment papers record his next of kin as his father, Alfred Whyndom Gray, residing at 258 Prospect Road, Prospect.

Following the war, Brian returned to civilian life in Adelaide. On 29 April 1950, he married Dorothy Ellen Bright at Rosary Church, Prospect, South Australia. Dorothy was the daughter of Harold John William Bright and Ellen Clara “Nellie” Emerton. Their marriage would endure for more than sixty years.

Together, Brian and Dorothy built a close and loving family life. They became the parents of Yvette and Dianne, welcomed son-in-law Stephen into the family, and later became proud grandparents to Jake and Alex.

He passed away on 24 July 2011, aged 88 years. Death and funeral notices were published in The Advertiser later that month. Brian is commemorated beside Dorothy on a shared memorial plaque which reads:

“Dearly loved parents of Yvette and Dian

Son-in-law Stephen

Loved grandparents of Jake and Alex

Always in our hearts.”

Dorothy survived Brian by four years before her passing in 2015.

Brian Whyndom Gray is remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and proud South Australian whose life reflected the strength and quiet dedication of his generation.
