Add my storyBiography
During his early life, Ern worked on the Western Australian goldfields. He returned to South Australia in the early 1900s and bought a farm near his family homestead, 'Pine Park'. He joined the military forces in August 1914 and served in the 3rd Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli and in the Middle East, returning to the farm at the end of the war in 1918.
He married Clara Louisa Wheaton, daughter of Wesley and Florence Wheaton of 'Ley Farm' South Road Edwardstown on 24th March 1920. They had a daughter Florence Merle Pederick born 21st July 1926.
Ern and his brother Fred did most of their farm work together but each had his own dairy, selling whole milk to Amscol. Clara and Ern attended the Bethesda church where Clara was the organist.
In 1944 the family sold the farm and moved to Price Street, Edwardstown, to care for the ageing Wesley, Clara's father, who died in 1945. Ern died in 1955 and Clara later sold the home and and spent her final years at Resthaven, Westbourne Park passing away on 15th March 1984.
Erns war medals are currently held by Trevor Glasson, 1st son of Harold and Merle Glasson who still reside together at Warradale, South Australia. Trevor lives at Seaview Downs, South Australia. They have two other sons, Kevin who lives at Kingscote, South Australia and Neil who lives at Seacliff Park, South Australia.
Ern never spoke about his years in the forces, perhaps because he found it difficult to do so.
