MICHAEL CAHALAN
SERVICE No: S68413
Twins Michael and Mary were born at Booleroo Centre on 27 September 1901, the children of Timothy John Cahalan and Esther Mary Larkin. Esther died in 1913 after giving birth to Michael’s youngest sister Kathleen Weronga. Timothy, left with 6 children, remarried to Bridget O’Dea (nee Griffin) in 1915.
An engine driver and engineer, Michael became engaged to Myrtle Dorreen Forster on 24 March 1934, married and settled at 4 Gawler Road, Abbatoirs. Michael enlisted in the Citizen Military Force at Wayville, on 19 April 1942 and served with A Company 2 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corp until the Corp was disbanded in 1945. The Volunteer Defence Force was a part time volunteer military force of WW2 open to men aged between 18 and 60, including those in reserved occupations. A Coy was manned by men from the Prospect area.
Michael was discharged on 2 October 1945. He died at Abbatoirs ( now Pooraka) on 4 February 1963 and is buried, with Myrtle, at North Road Cemetery, Nailsworth.
