Biography contributed by Sydney Technical High School

Born on the 16th of October 1897, Hallam Chesner Broe grew up in Rockdale NSW and attended Sydney Technical High school between 1912-1916. Broe’s father was a solicitor and the Mayor of Rockdale between February 1909 to the 12th of February 1912. His mother, Margaret Minnie Gardiner gave birth to Hallam’s sister Marie Broe when Hallam was 7 and was his only recorded sibling.

He attended Sydney Tech between 1912 to 1914. When news of the War began spreading in 1914, Hallam was still too young to go to war, and worked as an apprentice engineer until his enlistment date of the 22nd of June 1916. His hobbies included creating toy planes, as records show Broe entered a toy plane building competition. Broe was flagged as fit for active service.

Hallam Chesner Broe went to war at 18 years and 9 months old, serving as a private in WWI, acting in the Australian Flying Corps in the No.2 Squadron as an air mechanic. He embarked HMAT A38 Ulysses on 25 October 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth on the 28th of December the same year as stated in his disembarkment documents (4).He marched out the Scottish School For Fitters in Edinburgh for a one month course and then Hallam was admitted sick to hospital on the 21st of February, 1917, for bronchitis

He soon recovered to march with the 69th squadron (air force unit). Further along during the war, Hallam served the Machine Gun Corps in which he stayed for almost 2 months, fighting on the western front, before returning to the Australian Flying Corps as a private. Hallam marched with his squadron to South Carlton, Newland Lincoln, the same place where he met and married his European wife in June of 1917 in the St Martin Parish Church. During 1918 (2), Hallam’s eldest son Henry Wilfred Broe was born. On the 19th of August 1917, Broe proceeded overseas to France to continue serving for the air force.

After his arrival in Sydney on the 22nd of June 1920, Hallam was discharged 2 months later on the 14th of August in the same year. His father, Alderman Henry George Broe, passed away 3 months after Hallam’s arrival in Sydney.(1) Following the war, Broe’s eldest son, aged 8, tragically died in June of 1926 for reasons unknown. Hallam’s occupation after the war is unknown, along with his educational status. 6 years after Henry Wilfred Broe’s death, Broe’s second son, Henry George Broe named after his father, was born. Henry became Hallam’s next of kin after surviving World War II, and was Hallam’s only child after his birth. The rest of his life was lived peacefully, with his son surviving World War II. His mother passed away on the 23rd of July 1938 and with Hallam’s sister Minnie Isobel Marie Broe dying in 1961 (2) and his wife Olive Mary passing in 1974. Hallam sadly passed away on the 23rd of November 1974.
