2nd Lieutenant Eric Harold Salter (Service No:2276) enlisted in the AIF at Claremont, Tasmania on 25 May 1915 as a Private attached to 12th Infantry Battalion. Private Salter embarked with his Unit from Fremantle on 25 June 1915 for Gallipoli on board HMAT A62 Wandilla. On 29 March 1916 he embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles and was promoted through the ranks whislt in France with the 11th and 12th Infantry Battalions. 2nd Lieutenant Salter embarked from England for Sydney on 7 June 1918 on board HT D12 Essex and was attached to 12th Infantry Battalion on Termination of his Appointment on 7 September 1918. He later served in the Reserves in Tasmania as a Lieutenant. Eric's three sons - Ted, Rex and Don - served in WWII.

Eric was born in St Mary's, Tasmania in 1892, fourth of twelve children of Simeon Edward Salter (b1863 in Falmouth, Tasmania) and Louisa Lohrey (b1865 in Falmouth, Tasmania). Simeon was a Store Assistant in 1887 when he and Louisa married in German Town, St Marys where they settled and raised their family and Simeon worked as a Store Assistant.

Eric was a Railway Porter in St Marys and Oatlands before enlisting in the AIF. Following his Discharge, he worked in Hobart as a Public Servant and in 1918 married Eileen Victoria Nichols (b1894 in Richmond, Tasmania). Eric and Eileen settled in Hobart where they raised their family and Eric worked as a Clerk with the Taxation Office (Department of Treasury). Eileen died in 1956 and Eric in 1978.
