Captain George Eric Milne was the only surviving son of Mr. and Mrs. James Milne, of Camberwell, Victoria. He enlisted as a Sergeant in the original 24th Battalion and left Australia on 8 May 1915. He fought at Gallipoli, where he was wounded, and he was in one of the last parties to leave Anzac during the evacuation. He succumbed in France on April 5 to wounds received in action. He was awarded a Military Cross for gallantry the day before he was wounded. At the time of enlisting, he was an accountant in the advertising firm of Walker and Welford, Market Street, Melbourne.

He was a member of the Camberwell Cricket Club and of the Kooyong Lacrosse Club. He was also a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Camberwell. He was educated at the Camberwell State School and at Scotch College.
