Son of Dennis Lawrence O'Neill and Pauline O'Neill of Stanley Street, Leichhardt, Sydney, NSW.
On 10 June 1916 Desmond returned to Australia aboard HT Itonus for a hernia operation after which he was discharged until re-enlisting in 1917.
