Lewis was the youngest of seven children of Louis Nathan Shepherd (born 1841 in London, England) and second wife Helen Lillian Barr Wilson (born 1860 at McCullums Creek in Craigie, Victoria). Louis was a Teacher in Melbourne, Victoria when he married Helen in 1910. They lived in Melbourne, Victoria where Louis was a Teacher until his death in 1911. Helen moved to Penguin, Tasmania following Louis' death.

Lewis was a Butcher in Penguin, Tasmania and had been serving for three years with the Tasmanian Rangers when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915. He served as a Private (Service No:5229) with 12th Infantry Battalion 16th Reinforcements and 52nd Infantry Battalion. He was WiA on 7 August 1916 - with GSW to the face, neck and arms and died the next day. Lewis' belongings returned to his mother comprised a 'whistle, lanyard, photo, wallet, Linen Bag, YMCA ticket and diary' (National Archives Australia).

Lewis' epitaph reads 'Our lad Ruddy of hair and strong of limb. Private Lewis Norman Shepherd Australian Infantry 8th August 1916 Age 23. Buried Puchevillers British Cemetery, France' (epitaphsofthegreatwar.com/397)
