Private Edward John Cashen (Service No:S23873) enlisted in the ACMF on 6 March 1941, and was attached to 43 Battalion on 15 September 1941 when he enrolled in the Commonwealth Technical Training Scheme (CTTS). Both younger siblings - Jim and Bill - also served in WWII.
Jack was born in Coolgardie, Western Austrlai in 1913, second child (and eldest son) of Patrick Thomas Cashen (b1871 in Maldon, Victoria) and Mary (Sis) Sheedy (b1882 in Adelaide, South Australia). Patrick had moved to Fremantle, WA in the early 1900s, and was a Draper in Coolgardie in 1910 when he and Sis married. Patrick and Sis lived in Coolgardie, where they raised their family and Patrick was Manager for Messrs Brennan Bros (Drapers). Patrick was transferred to Kalgoorlie in 1917, where he died in 1924. Sis and the children moved to Mile End in Adelaide, South Australia.
Jack worked as a Salesman for Myer Emporium in Adelaide, and in 1942 married Irene May Brady (b1914 in Alberton, South Australia) - Irene was working as a Ticket Writer at Henley Beach. Jack and Irene settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and Jack was a Salesman and Treasurer of the Shop Assistants' Union. Jack died in 1984 and Irene in 2006.
