Two World War Conflicts
WW1
Raymond enlisted on 26 July, 1915 his original Service no 4 at the age of 26. Eventually assigned to the 43 Infantry Battalion (France) later the 27th Battalion. He was number eight of ten children. Originally he named his mother Caroline Stanley as his next of kin, this changed once he married Regina Bertha Jane (nee Meyer) just after enlisting (22/09/1915).
9 March, 1916 promoted to Sgt Drummer, AAR Band
16 April, 1915 promoted to Sgt.
9 June, 1916 embarked to England on A19 "Afric"
25 November, 1916 embarked to France
9 March, 1916 returned to England aboard HS Newhaven
13 July, 1917 was promoted to Warrant Officer (Class 2) whilst based in England
26 November 1917 A/W.O (Class 11) reverted to permanent grade of Sgt on Marching out to No.2 Command Depot.
10 January, 1918 returned to Australia for discharge aboard HT Corinthic, due to left ear perforation.
19 March, 1918 discharged. Served 2 years and 237 days of that 1 year and 268 days was service abroad.
WW11
Raymond enlisted on 10 September, 1940 at the age of 50 his Service no S573. Assigned to the 4th Garrison Battalion
2 October, 1940 assigned to the 18 Garrison Battalion .
19 November, 1940 attached to the 4 Garrison Battalion, B Company.
7 May, 1941 assigned again to the 18 Garrison Battalion.
14 October, 1941 promoted to Acting Corporal
Disharged date unknown but am aware that he was noted in 1961 as being on nominal role as W.O. I also believe that he may have been stationed overseas during WW11 but not sure where as writing is not very legible.
Haven't been able to find more in Ray's WW11 file as both of his files have been amalgamated into one under S573. Also there is a note that makes mention that a Major Raymond, STANLEY also had some information in this file which has been removed.
Raymond is buried at Mitcham Cemetery, unfortunately there is no head stone nor is there any recognition of his service to Australia in both conflicts. I hope to be able to rectify this.
