Headley George Faithfull was born on 28 October 1884 in Roma, Queensland, to William Ernest Faithfull and Elizabeth Fenelon Faithfull (née Ferdinand).
He first enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in September 1914 (service number 3338), serving for 11 weeks and 1 day with the A.I.F. at Brisbane before being discharged medically unfit, but was accepted for service again in November 1916 (service number 7245).
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A33 Ayrshire on 24 January 1917 and disembarked at Devonport, England, on 12 April 1917. The following day he marched into the 3rd Training Battalion. His early months in England were marked by illness: he was admitted to Parkhouse Hospital on 24 May 1917 with mumps and did not rejoin his unit until 13 June. He continued training and was taken on strength of the 32nd Infantry Battalion before being transferred to the 33rd Battalion on 21 October 1917.
Faithfull proceeded overseas to France from Southampton and joined his battalion in the field in November 1917 in Belgium. Through 1918 he experienced recurring illness, being admitted to hospital several times for debility and myalgia. He rejoined his battalion from sick duty at various intervals in May and June 1918. He was then transferred to the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station and later to other medical units during the British advance.
He continued to serve in France through the final months of the war. On 24 September 1918 he was taken on strength at the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station from the 9th Battalion, and on 15 November 1918 he was granted leave in the United Kingdom. After his return from leave, he remained with medical units in France until March 1919.
On 5 March 1919 he was admitted to the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station suffering from illness and was transferred to the 3rd Australian General Hospital. Further transfers through medical and convalescent units followed during March and April. He embarked for return to Australia on HMAT Main in July 1919 and disembarked in October 1919. He was discharged from the A.I.F. medically unfit in November 1919.
Following his return to Australia, he was recorded living in Childers, Queensland, in 1922; working as a gardener and residing in Brisbane by 1937; living in Pialba, Queensland, in 1943; and in Shorncliffe, Queensland, in 1954.
T/Corporal Headley George Faithfull died on 7 November 1957, aged 73, and was buried in Anzac Portion 9, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane. He was a single man who never married and had no known children.
After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity and dignity have now been restored.
We have remembered him.
Lest We Forget.
