Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From 52nd Battalion AIF

Sgt Bernard Raphael DOOLEY was a single bank clerk from Ulverstone. He had served five years in the militia pre-war and on enlistment he went into the 4th reinforcements for the 12th Bn. Her served at Gallipoli and was promoted to lance corporal. In March 1916, back in Egypt, he was transferred to the 52nd Bn and promoted to corporal, then to sergeant as they sailed to France. At Mouquet Farm on 3-4 September 1916, he was badly wounded in the hand and transferred to the 8th Stationary Hospital at Wimereux, then onto England. He then attended a School of Instruction for NCOs before returning to the 52nd in late April 1917. At Messines, he was shot through the neck when he was part of a bombing party raiding a group of German soldiers taking cover in shell holes. Although a witness stated his body was recovered and buried, it was later lost.
