Early Life

Bartley George Shepherd was born on 3 June 1922 in Nairne, South Australia, to Hurtle Robert Shepherd and Glory Naomi Williams. He grew up in the rural community of Rockleigh, near Murray Bridge, and worked as a farm hand before the war.

 


Military Service

Militia Service (AMF)

Enlisted in the Australian Military Forces (Militia) on 18 March 1941 at Ashbourne, SA, aged 20, service number S11671.
Posted to the 13th Field Regiment as a Gunner.
Attended several training camps in South Australia during 1941.
AIF Transfer

On 18 January 1943, while serving in Port Moresby, transferred from the AMF to the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) with new service number SX30981.
Continued with the 13th Field Regiment before later postings.
Overseas Service

Served in New Guinea with the 13th Field Regiment during the Pacific War.
Hospitalised on several occasions for illness, including bronchitis and pyelitis.
Later transferred to the Australian Provost Corps (2/2 Australian Lines of Communication Provost Company), serving as a military policeman.
Promoted to Corporal in February 1945.
Discharge

Discharged on 7 March 1946, having completed 1,617 days of service, including 624 days overseas.

 

Marriage and Family

On 8 December 1943, while on active service, Bartley married Marjory Grace Pym of Rockleigh, SA.

They had three children: Robert, Annette, and Rosemary Shepherd.

After the war, the family settled in Blair Athol, South Australia.

 


Later Life and Death

Bartley George Shepherd died on 16 September 1970 at Daw Park Repatriation General Hospital, aged 48. He was cremated at Enfield Memorial Park.

Following his death, Marjory married Leonard Keith Fountain (1913–1995), who became stepfather to the three children.

Marjory lived to the age of 94, passing away on 29 November 2018. She is buried with Leonard at Enfield Memorial Park, Lutheran Section, Row Y, Site 50.

 


Commemoration

Bartley is commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as a WWII ex-serviceman.
