Eldest of four brothers (Fred, Ron, Allan and George) who served in WWII, Private Frederick James Sherwell (Service Nos:S5696/SX23257) initially served in the ACMF as a Trooper attached to 3rd Light Horse Regiment and 9th Motor Regiment from 19 December 1941 to 7 July 1942. Trooper Sherwell enlisted in the AIF on 8 July 1942 with 3 Australian Reconnaissance Squadron, and transferred to 2/4 Armoured Regiment on 3 April 1943. He served in the Solomons, Madang, Bougainville and Torokina with 58/59 InfantryBattalion and 2/4 Armoured Regiment (25 August 1944 - 23 October 1945), and was WiA (Shell Wound) at Bougainville on 17 May 1945. Private Sherwell was attached to 2/4 Armoured Regiment at Discharge on 5 February 1946.
Fred was born in Murtoa, Victoria in 1911, third of eleven children of James (Jim) Sherwell (b1867 in Burra, South Australia) and his second wife Jessie Cliff (b1878 in Morphett Vale, South Australia). Jim moved to Benalla in Victoria in 1885 and established himself as a Farmer. In 1906 he was a Widower with three young children when he and Jessie married in Nhill. By 1916 Jim commenced Contracting, and he and Jessie settled in Nhill where they raised their family.
Fred played football and cricket in Nhill, then played for the Bordertown Football Club when he moved to South Australia in the 1930s. Fred was a Barber/Hairdresser in Bordertown, South Australia in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Fred settled in Naracoorte, where he worked as a Barber/Hairdresser. Fred died in 1999.
