Son of John Grant, of Harper Terrace, Midland Junction, Western Australian, and the late Lillian Amelia May Grant. Born at Bulong, Western Australia, his mother passed away at Kalgoorlie in 1906 when Claude was only 9 years of age.

Claude enlisted at age 18 years 8 months 11th Battalion, died at only 19 years of age. His identity disc was sent home to his father during April 1918.

His two brothers, Leslie William Grant, died 29 April 1915, Gallipoli; Harold Isadore Grant, 44th Bn, killed in action 8 August 1918.
