Early Life & Family

Lyall James "Jim" Baker was born on 28 January 1910 at Moockra, South Australia, to Alice Rose Baker, then 17. Raised by his grandparents on the Baker family farm, Jim grew up in the remote Flinders region before later settling in Adelaide. On 10 October 1932, he married Gladys Maskell at the Methodist Parsonage, Peterborough.

 

ENLISTMENT – AUSTRALIAN MILITARY FORCES (Militia)

Age on enlistment: 30 years, 10 months

On his Mobilization Enrolment Form, Jim declared:

 


"I, Lyall James Baker, swear that I will well and truly serve our Sovereign Lord, the King…"

He signed both the enrolment and the oath.

Jim served for more than a year in New Guinea with supply and logistics units, ensuring the flow of food, ammunition, and essential stores to Australian troops in the Pacific theatre.

His B103 casualty sheets list recurrent medical issues:

Dermatitis
Tropical skin infections
Urticarial reactions
Malaise, fevers, and unspecified dermatitis flare-ups
Multiple admissions & discharges across hospitals and CCS units
Despite this, Jim repeatedly returned to duty.

After returning from New Guinea late 1944, he continued service in:

His medical classification was later recorded as Class D (29/1/1944).
