In 1939 Lawrence enlisted and was discharged the same day because when he went home in uniform his mother marched him straight back to Keswick Barracks, he didn’t enlist again until 1942.

Roy married Lillian Joyce Smith on 27 March 1945. They had 5 children and were later divorced.  Roy continued to suffer with bouts of malaria attributed to his war service and became an alcoholic.
