Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

The Midgley family shifted from Sydney to Kalgoorlie in 1896, when Charles was an infant. They lived in rough tent camps on the goldfields for some time. Charles Herbert Midgley arrived in the Middle East during December 1915 and was struck down with typhoid and enteric. After months of treatment, he only arrived in France on 9 June 1916. He was killed in action at Pozieres less than two months later. His younger brother 2720 Pte. Raymond William Midgley 51st Battalion AIF was also killed in action at Pozieres 8 days later on 14 August 1916, aged 21.
