Son of Joseph O'Brien and Isabella O'Brien nee Banks of  Rowan Street, Wangaratta, Victoria.

Commenced return to Australia, first time, on 2 June 1915 aboard SS Hororata for change due to wounding returning to duty on 1 November 1915. He later embarked for overseas with the 31st Battalion disembarking at Suez.

Commenced return to Australia, second time, on 2 June 1919 aboard HT Beltana disembarking on 19 July 1919
