Biography contributed by Trinity College

Vyeceslav Scubatovich was born in Pristina, a large city in Kosovo, Serbia. It is unknown when Vyecleslav moved to Australia or the names of his parents. Vyeceslav worked as an upholsterer and lived in Perth, Western Australia. His name was also sometimes written as Vjescelsav Scubatovich in war documents.

Vyeceslav departed Australia with the 11th Battalion, 25th Reinforcement on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 29th of June 1917.

Before travelling to France, he was admitted to hospital in England with mumps.

He was killed in action on Saturday, the 6th of April 1918, possible by shelling as stated by the Australian Infantry Battalion War Diaries. He has no known grave but is remembered with honour at the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Vyeceslav Scubatovich was posthumously awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal after the war had concluded.

Private Vincent Scubat

NAA also holds a service file for a Vincent Scubat who enlisted on 3 January 1916 at Blackboy Hill, Perth WA.  Vincent had two years previous service in the Serbian Army before coming to Australia.

Both men had the same birthplace as well as a crucifixion tattoo on the right forearm.  With these features as well as their similar names and appearance I believe they are one and the same man.

Vincent was in camp waiting to go overseas with the 28th Battalion when he was posted back to 22 Depot Company and discharged on 19 April 1916 "in consequence of nationality".
