Biography contributed by Cherilyn McMeekin

Laurence was the second-youngest of nine children born to Reuben and Clara SCADDEN of Houghton, South Australia. He enlisted at age 20 in 1939. One of his older brothers, Gerald, also enlisted (SX18081).

Laurence was captured at Ruin Ridge at Alamein. He was a POW on board the Italian transport ship Nino Bixio when it was torpedoed by a British submarine in the Mediterranean on 17 August 1942. The Nino Bixio was transporting Allied POWs from Libya to Italy. Laurence was one of 122 Australian POWs to survive the incident.

He married Rosalind Mary ALLCHURCH on 1 December 1951 at Tea Tree Gully Baptist Church in South Australia and died on 16 September 1976 at age 55. Rosalind did not remarry and died in 2004 at age 74.
