Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of James and Elizabeth Hamilton GARDNER, 66 New Street, Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Husband of M E GARDNER, 32 Eldridge Street, Toowong, Brisbane, Qld.

During fighting at Gallipoli he was serverly wounded and lost his right eye and 1st finger on his right hand.  He was invalided back to Australia in Feburary 1916.

In 1917 Thomas married Margaret (Maggie) Keillor and they had one daughter.  The family lived at The Summitt near Stanthorpe, and later had a dairy farm at Allora.  In c1936 they were living in Brisbane and had a small Casket agency.

Tom enlisted for home service in WW2, and his nephew remembers him immaculate in his uniform.  He also remembers him playing cards, shuffling and dealing with his mutilated hand  and used to put his glass eye in a glass of water overnight, and his wife would tell the nephews and nieces to behave, as Uncle tom was watching them, even when he was asleep!

Tom and Maggie retired to Margate on the Redcliffe Peninsula, where Tom played bowls and worked part time at a shop at the beach.

He died in Brisbane in 1963 aged 74 years.  In 1967 Maggie wrote re the Gallipoli medal from their Redcliffe address - 46 King Street, Woody Point, Redcliffe.
