Son of Hugh O'Donnell and Henrietta (Hetty) Mary Shields formerly O'Donnell of Carlaminda, Cooma, NSW.

At the time of enlistment Hugh was employed at Balmain Bros. of Cooma, NSW as a driver.

Commenced return to Australia on 18 December 1919 aboard HT Konigin Luise disembarking on 7 February 1920
