Sub-Lieutenant Coleman was born in Hampton on 6 April 1929 and enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in May 1948 where he trained at HMAS Cerberus.

In August 1948 he temporarily transferred to the RAAF to undergo flight training before serving as a fighter pilot on the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney in Korea.

On 2 January 1952 Sub Lieutenant Coleman was serving with 805 Squadron when he launched from HMAS Sydney on a Hawker Sea Fury. He disappeared from his formation and was never seen again. His body was never recovered and was regarded as missing, presumed killed in action.
