“The first AIF man to receive the American award of the Legion of Merit is BRIGADIER RT. N. L. HOPKINS, A Victorian who has been serving as liaison officer on the staff of Admiral Daniel E. Barbey commander of amphibious forces in the South West Pacific area. Brigadier Hopkins has taken part in landing operations at 11 centres – Woodlark, Lae, Finschhafen, Arawe, Cape Gloucester, Saidor, Hollandia, Wakde and Biak islands, Sansapor and Morotai – and the citation pays tribute to his “exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service to the United States Government.” Brigadier Hopkins graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in 19178 and was given command of the Seventh Australian Division cavalry regiment in 1940”.
