Flying Officer Raymond Edward Norton Butcher was the son of Edward William Timperley Butcher and Muriel Leura Butcher of Armadale, Western Australia.

Prior to enlisting in the RAAF Flying Officer Raymond Butcher was a volunteer member of the 16th Battalion Cameron Highlanders as a sergeant. He was a car salesman

He was attached to 101 Squadron RAF after training with the Empire Air Training Scheme in Canada and Britain.

He was a crew member in the front turret of the Wellington bomber X3815 which was lost during operations on 21 September 1942 when it crashed in Denmark following an attack by enemy aircraft.
