Fred was the seventh of nine children of Charles August Johnson (born 1850 in Kalmar, Sweden) and Mary Auguste Caroline Luder (born 1860 in Germany). Charles was a Mariner when he arrived in Sydney, NSW on board the Jason in 1868. He and Mary married in Ipswich, QLD in 1878. Charles was a Tailor, and the family lived in Ipswich until Mary's death in 1906.
Fred was a Carpenter in Brisbane, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in January 1916, and served as a Private (Service No:1675) with 47th and 45th Infantry Battalions and 4th Pioneer Battalion. Brother Alfred Ernest (Service No:5923), and Brothers-in-Law Oscar Joseph Gridley (Service No:370), John Hinkley (Service No:5108), and Charles Albert Fry (Service No:5336) also served in WWI,
Discharged in August 1919, Fred returned to Brisbane, QLD and was working as a Carpenter when he married Estella Ivins (born 1900 in Ipswich, QLD) in 1921. Fred and Estella moved to Cooloolabin in Nambour, QLD where Fred was a Farmer until 1930, when Estella moved into Nambour and worked as a Dressmaker (died in 1962). Fred returned work as a Carpenter, living in Brisbane and then Redcliffe. He died in 1974.
