Pte 645 Frederick James Perry was born in Malmsbury and grew up at Bears Lagoon. He enlisted in March, 1916, aged 24.

He sailed in the SS Runic in June 1916, taking part in battles in Messines, Broodseinde Ridge and Passchendaele, where he was wounded.

Lance Corporal Perry was awarded the DCM in December 1917, and discharged in January 1918.
