Son of Denis Henry and Catherine Winifred CULHANE, Downey Street, Alexandra, Vic.
WE LOVED HIM IN LIFE, LET US NOT FORGET HIM IN DEATH...R.I.P.
Word was officially received on Tuesday that Pte. Francis James ("Jim") Culhane had been killed. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Culhane, of Downey Street, Alexandra, to whom the deepest sympathy is expressed from the whole of the Shire. The late Pte. Culhane was born at Alexandra, and went to the Alexandra State School. On leaving school he served his apprenticeship as a baker and pastrycook at Mornington. He worked in Ringwood and Doncaster districts for some time. He enlisted in the A.I.F., and saw service in the Middle East and returned to Australia with the Ninth Division. Afterwards he went to the New Guinea area, where he was killed.
To all who knew "Jim," he was a good citizen—upright in principle always. Of a kind disposition and likeable nature, he gained many friends. He was an excellent son to his parents. The war came and he, with his six brothers—Jack, Leo, Gavan, Fred, Bernie, Louis— answered the country's call. A brother- in-law (Pte. Frank Quinsee) is attached to the same unit as "Jim" was. They had been together in the Middle East and New Guinea.
Flags were flown at half mast at the Shire Hall and the R.S.L. Club Room on Tuesday afternoon in honor of a gallant soldier — Pte. F. J. ("Jim") Culhane.
