Leslie had previously been a Private in the 2nd AIF, having joined on 13 August, 1940. He was discharged on 27 October, 1941 from the 14 Reserve Motor Transport Company. He later joined the Royal Australian Navy as a Stoker II on 26 November, 1941. Sadly, Leslie was killed on 1 June, 1942 when onboard HMAS Kuttabul, when she was attacked by a Japanese midget submarine.
