Flying Officer Robert John Granger 434950 of Number 5 Squadron was killed when Boomerang A46-192 crashed into thick jungle on a hillside near Mount Molloy. The Boomerang was flying low during a tactical reconnaissance exercise when it crashed into the hillside. The aircraft exploded on impact and burnt fiercely killing the pilot.
