Private Raymond John Henshaw (Service Nos:VX102232/V221266) enlisted in the ACMF on 1 March 1942 and was attached to the 59th Infantry Battlion when he enlsted 'in the Field' in the AIF on 25 July 1942. Private Henshaw served in New Guinea and was attached to 58/59 Infantry Battalion when he was KiA at Bougainville on 19 May 1945. Sibling Ralph (Service No:VX119792) also served in WWII and father Melville (Service No:3399) served in WWI as did Uncles Ralph and Clifford.

Born in 1922 in Melbourne Victoria, Raymond was the second of three children of Melville John Stanley Henshaw (b1891 in Zeehan, Tasmania) and Ruby Tucker (b1895 in Emu Bay, Tasmania). Melville (a Conductor) and Ruby married in 1920 in Melbourne, Victoria. Melville had worked as a Labourer before enlisting in the AIF in 1917. Melville and Ruby settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Melville worked as a Conductor.

Raymond had worked as a Dairy Hand and Garage Hand in Melbourne, but was Unemployed in 1942 when he enlisted.
