Captain Frederick James Sydney Hoad served in three conflicts, and was in the Senior Cadets prior to enlisting in the Boer War on 11 February 1902, when he was a Private (Service No:2316) with 4th Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse (Victoria). On 18 August 1914, he enlisted as a Sergeant (Service No:641) in the AIF, and was attached to 7th Infantry Battalion on 19 October 1914 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Suez on board HMAT A20 Hororata. As 2nd Lieutenenant, he embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles on 25 March 1916. Captain Hoad was WiA (shrapnel/GSW thigh), captured by the Germans at Pozieres on 18 August 1916 and interned (PoW No:32) in Germany and Switzerland. Recovered from the Germans on 27 November 1917, Captain Hoad was repatriated to England, embarking for Melbourne on 20 December 1918 on board HT Orontes. Captain Hoad was attached to 7th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 4 May 1919. Captain Hoad served in the ACMF in WWII (Service No:V82001), attached to 3rd District Records.

Fred was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1883, youngest of two children of James Henry Hoad (b1854 in Goulburn, New South Wales) and his first wife Elizabeth Jane Matthews (b1855 in Melbourne, Victoria). James and Elizabeth married in Cassilis, New South Wales in 1879, and in 1880 settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and James was a Tailor. Following Elizabeth's death in 1885, James remarried - living in Wangaratta and Melbourne, where he was a Taior. James was killed in 1913 when he was hit by a motor cycle whilst crossing the road.

Fred was a Groom in Melbourne before enlisting in the Boer War. In 1903 he was a Box Maker in Melbourne, where he married Clara (Louie) Louisa Lancaster (b1872 in Yorkshire, England) - Louie immigrated in 1880, arriving in Melbourne on board the Marpesia, and working in Melbourne as a Dressmaker. In 1905 Fred and Louie travelled to New Zealand, where they lived for eighteen months and Fred worked as a Motor Man in Long Island. Returning to Melbourne, Fred worked as a Caretaker, Tramways Gripman and for Victorian Railways as a Shunter and Electrical Fitter. Following his discharge from the AIF in 1919, Fred worked as an Electrical Fitter with the VGR and as a Clerk. He and Louie separated in 1923 and divorced in 1932. Fred was working as a Clerk in Melbourne in 1940 when he enlisted in the ACMF. Fred died in 1941 and Louie in 1961.
