13 Apr 1941: Honoured Military Medal, Siege of Tobruk, "Action Tobruk. For bravery in the field on the night of April 13-14. This soldier in the absence of his platoon commander, led his platoon in a counter-attack upon an enemy post containing eight machine guns, with such skill and disregard of personal danger that the post was overcome. This action made the resultant counter-attack so successful that the enemy were completely demoralised and driven from their positions in disorder. Sergeant McElroy's leadership was such that only one life was lost in the attack upon the strong post".
