An Original Anzac who served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

53 years ago today, on the 28th August 1972, Private Arthur Henry Barrett, 4th Battalion (Reg No-990), shunter and railway guard from 7 McIsaac Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales and 36 Greaves Street, Mayfield East, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 88. CATHOLIC 1-25. 89.

Born at Hay Mills, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England about June? 1884 to Harry (Henry) died?, and Eliza Barrett, died 11.3.1929, Tighes Hill, N.S.W., age 83, sleeping at CATHOLIC 1-26. 89, from 7 McIsaac Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales; husband of Hilda Annie Barrett nee Norton, married 27.4.1918, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 27.1.1964, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 70, sleeping at CATHOLIC 1-26. 89, Arthur enlisted on the 7th September 1914 at Randwick, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board Transport A14 Euripides on the 20th October 1914.

Admitted to hospital 8.1.1915 (septic throat), 4.3.1915 (appendicitis), 9.5.1915 (dysentery), 20.6.1915 (conjunctivitis), 29.7.1915 (influenza).

Also mentioned is Private Thomas Francis Lett, married storekeeper and steel worker (Newcastle, B.H.P.), from 7 McIsaac Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales, enlisted 1.9.1914, 4th Battalion, Reg No-854, an Original Anzac, admitted to hospital 8.5.1915 (bad feet), 19.5.1915 (bronchopneumonia), RTA 29th January 1916 (medically unfit, bronchopneumonia), discharged 2nd June 1916, re-enlisted 21.8.1916, Reg No 6386, admitted to hospital 22.3.1918 (rheumatism), RTA invalided 5th August 1918 (myalgia), laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the 9.7.1936, age 52 - CATHOLIC 2-37. 33, father of four (Dorothy Phyllis Maria, Eileen Alice, 2 females deceased), no headstone, wooden cross erected 24.8.2019. I submitted an application to DVA February 2020 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip, unfortunately declined April 2020, not officially commemorated.

Commenced return to Australia 12.12.1915.

Arthur arrived home invalided on the 29th January 1916, being discharged medically unfit (rheumatoid arthritis, enteric fever) on the 28th August 1916.

Received all 3 War Medals.

Mr. Barrett’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1), Tighes Hill-Australian Holy Catholic Guild Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name probably inscribed on the Tighes Hill Roll of Honour (linen) by Miss Blanch Buck.

I have placed poppies at Arthur’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
