Pilot Officer Norton 411173 of Number 75 Squadron was killed in Kittyhawk A29-3

The aircraft crashed and burnt fiercely near Wauchope, NSW - members of an Army unit were on the scene quickly but were unable to help as exploding ammunition kept them at bay.

Pilot-Officer James William Norton, Rugby League full-back of Queanbeyan and Eastern Suburbs teams, has been killed in an air accident. Jim Norton was 26 years of age. His funeral took place at Queanbeyan yesterday. Four years ago be caught the eye of thousands of people in an elimination match at Wollongong for country teams to visit Sydney. Eastern Suburbs and South Sydney representatives became keen contenders for Norton's services. Eastern Suburbs won. Norton did not rise to the heights expected, but played many fine games in the premiership. He was a member of the 1938 Eastern Suburbs team which visited New Zealand.
