Hubert David William Thompson was the son of Joseph and Sarah Thompson, of Krowera, Victoria. His younger brother, 2421 Pte. Cecil Robert Thompson 37th Battalion AIF was later killed in action on 23 April, 1917, aged 25.
Another brother, 2139 Corporal Percival Joseph Thompson 8th Battalion AIF, returned to Australia 24 August 1918 and was discharged medically unfit.
Hubert served on Gallipoli and was evacuated with dysentery on 30 September 1915. He was reported as killed in action at Pozieres on 25 July 1916 and buried in the Gordon Dump Cemetery at Ovillers-La Boiselle, France. He was buried by a Chaplain R.A. Haines.
