Biography contributed by Aubrey Bairstow

Thomas “Tommy” John Brown was an 18 year old labourer from Toowoomba when he enlisted in the 2nd Light Horse in September 1915. His next of him was his mother in Bundaberg.

Whilst in Egypt in May 1916 he transferred to artillery duties and upon arriving in France at the end of June was attached to 4th Divisional Ammunition Sub Park. After periods of illness he was taken on strength with 26th Battalion and served with them in France and Belgium.

He was wounded in action on 2 November 1917 in the engagements around Polygon Wood.. Tragically the hole he was sheltering in was his by a gas shell. This killed his colleague and not only gassed Tommy Brown but also shattered his arm.

He was dug out of the hole and was conscious enough to enquire of the wellbeing of his deceased friend. He was last seen with stretcher bearers heading towards medical help. It is presumed that he was killed as he made his way back. He has no known grave.
