One of four brothers who served in WWI and/or WWII, Lieutenant Arthur Bensley served in the ACMF with 1 Lines of Communication Signals from 18 March 1942 to 17 January 1945.
Arthur was born in Ipswich, QLD in 1905, fourth of five children of Arthur Bensley Snr (b1864 in Norfolk, England) and Margaret (Maggie) Elder (b1869 in Fifeshire, Scotland). Both Arthur and Maggie immigrated with their parents and siblings - Arthur in 1871 on board the Storm King and Maggie 1884 on board the Chybassa. Arthur Snr was a Freeholder in 1890 when he and Maggie married at Rosewood on the Darling Downs, where they settled and raised their family and Arthur Snr was a Farmer. The family later lived in Cleveland in Brisbane and in Stanthorpe, where Arthur Snr was a Fruit Grower and Orchardist.
Arthur joined the Public Service as a Junior Mechanic with the Postmaster General's Department, and was a Mechanic in Bundaberg when, in 1930 he married his first wife Edna Millicent Crouch (b1902 in Kaniva, Victoria) - Edna was working in Toowoomba as a Clerk. Arthur and Edna settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Arthur was an Engineer with the PMGs Dept. Following Edna's death in 1950, Arthur remarried in Brisbane in 1952 to Alice Clarissa Wright (b1909 in Brisbane, QLD) - Alice was a Typist in Brisbane. Arthur and Alice settled in Brisbane, and Arthur was an Engineer with the PMGs Dept until his death in 1971. Alice died in 1990.
