Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Dorset Tasmania History Society

Pte Joseph Henry (Joe) NEWITT was born in Scottsdale in 1897. He enlisted in the AIF in August 1915, at the age of 18, joining the 12th and later the 52nd Battalion, leaving Australia in November 1915 for Egypt and later France. In 1916 his mother, Margaret, received a letter from the Commanding Officer of the 4th Australian Division commending him on his gallantry near Mouquet Farm in bringing in wounded men. Around the same time he was admitted to hospital in England for a gunshot wound to the leg. He was reported wounded again in 1918. He returned home in 1919, arriving at the Scottsdale Railway Station in June 1919 alongside Reg Lade and Tom Campbell to a warm welcome.
