Son of John and Elizabeth McQuat of ‘Gateside’ 11 Eureka Street Geelong West Victoria.  His mother, Elizabeth was deceased at the time of his enlistment. 

A Linesman at the time of his enlistment at age 24, he was appointed to the 4th Reinforcements of the 8th Battalion.  He served in Gallipoli with the 8th Battalion from 26 May 1915 but was transferred to Lemnos on 26 September 1915 with illness recorded as enteric, and later to Mudros hospital in Greece.  

Still ill, on 25 November 1915 and just prior to the evacuation from Gallipoli, Walter was transferred to the London War Hospital in Epsom for further recouperation before on 29 February 1916 was appointed to Weymouth Base Depot.  Finally on 6 July 1916, Walter was taken on strength to the 2nd Training Battalion located in Tidsworth, Salisbury England.

On 10 September 1916, Walter proceeded to Etables, France and then rejoined the 8th Battalion in Belgium on 19 September.  7 weeks later, Walter was ‘Killed in the Field’ from gunshot wounds to the face and buttocks on 9 November 1916.  His actual place of death is listed a 4th General Hospital, Camiers, France.

Walter was later buried at the Etables Military Cemetery in France.

His personal effects returned to his father consisted of - Wrist Watch (metal) & metal cover, Wallet, Photos, Card, Money Belt, Pendant, Swastica (metal).
