George joined the 43rd Battalion and left Australia on the Afric 0n 9 March 1916, reaching England on 9 June. Private Slape proceeded to France where he was hospitalised with illness for 4 days in mid-December. He was again hospitalised with a knee injury in 1917. George returned to Australia on the H.T.Nestor on 20 May 1919 and was discharged on 14 August.
