Red Cross File for Leslie Garling
I knew Garling, he was called Nipper, he was in C Company. The first day of the Messines attack he was shot through the right lung whilst talking to me. He fell and I dressed his wound and had to leave him. This was within 200 yards of the first German line beyond Messines about 800 yards beyond. I do not think he could be a prisoner as the Germans did not come over this spot and I do not think he could have lived any time as he could only just speak when I had to leave him. H would not let me move him. His two brothers and a sister came to see me in London and I told them as above.
Hand, J.A. Captain. 45th Battalion.
