From Finland, the Kotkamaas arrived in Queensland in 1900 on a ship and headed inland from Cooktown through the bush 'with a team of horses and a wagon, there being no roads whatsoever'.
The father got a job with the railways and as a consequence the family often had to survive in remote parts of Queensland.
Johannes Kotkamaa's sister gave his home as Nambour, Queensland, on his Roll of Honour form.
